Personal tax, planned rather than reported.
Personal, trust and estate returns prepared by a chartered accountant who plans through the year, so April confirms a position you already decided.

The return reflects decisions made earlier.
Personal returns planned through the year and filed against the April 30 deadline, with T3 trust and estate filings handled on their own dates.
Where a trust or an estate is involved, the planning starts well before the filing is due.
Everything in the engagement.
Personal returns
Prepared and filed against the April 30 deadline, or June 15 where self-employment applies.
Trust and estate returns
Filed on their own deadlines, including graduated rate estates and the newer bare trust reporting.
Returns on death
The deceased’s final T1, plus the optional returns that can split income across separate filings.
Clearance certificates
Applied for so the estate can be distributed without leaving the executor personally exposed.
Where this usually applies.
Individuals with more than employment income
Self-employment, rental, investment or capital gains alongside a T4.
Trustees and executors
Administering an estate or trust with filing obligations and a distribution to make.
Families planning ahead
Where the point is to reduce what the estate owes rather than report it afterwards.
Three steps, no surprises.
Plan through the year
Positions are reviewed while decisions can still change the outcome.
Prepare and reconcile
Returns are prepared against slips, statements and prior filings.
File and follow through
Filed on the applicable deadline, with CRA reviews handled if they arrive.
The ones we get asked most.
Who needs to file a T3 trust return?
Most trusts must file annually, and the reporting rules now catch many arrangements that previously did not file, including some bare trusts. The penalties for not filing apply even where no tax is owing.
When is a T3 return due?
Ninety days after the trust’s year end. For a graduated rate estate the year end can be chosen, which is itself a planning decision.
Is there an inheritance tax in Canada?
No. Canada taxes the estate rather than the beneficiary, mainly through a deemed disposition of capital property immediately before death, plus provincial probate fees.
How much can you inherit tax free in Canada?
There is no tax on receiving an inheritance. The tax is settled by the estate before distribution, which is why the final return and clearance certificate matter.
What is a clearance certificate?
CRA confirmation that the deceased’s taxes are settled. Distributing an estate without one can leave the executor personally liable for amounts still owing.
