What it covers

Run, remitted and reconciled.

Payroll runs, source deductions calculated and remitted, T4 and T5 slips prepared, and the year-end filings handled.

Payroll is remitted the fifteenth of every month, and the numbers reconcile back to the books because the same people keep both.

What's included

Everything in the engagement.

Each cycle

Payroll runs

Processed on your cycle, with net pay and the register produced every period.

Remittance

Source deductions

Year end

T4 and T5 slips

Who it's for

Where this usually applies.

First-time employers

Where the first hire has just created a payroll account and a set of deadlines.

Owner-managers on salary

Where remuneration is part of the corporate tax plan, not just an expense.

Small teams

Enough staff that a missed remittance becomes expensive quickly.

How it works

Three steps, no surprises.

01

Set up the account

Payroll account registered and configured, with the remittance frequency confirmed.

02

Run and remit

Payroll processed each cycle, deductions remitted the fifteenth of the following month.

03

Close the year

T4s prepared and filed, and the year reconciled against the books.

Questions

The ones we get asked most.

When are payroll remittances due in Canada?

For most employers, the fifteenth of the month following the month the payroll was paid. Larger employers remit more frequently, and the CRA assigns your frequency based on your average monthly withholding.

What is the penalty for a late payroll remittance?

The CRA charges a penalty on the amount, rising with how late it is, plus interest. Repeated failures increase the rate, and directors can be held personally liable for unremitted source deductions.

When are T4 slips due?

The last day of February following the calendar year. They must be filed with the CRA and distributed to employees by the same date.

Do I need a payroll account for one employee?

Yes. A payroll program account is required as soon as you pay salary, wages or a taxable benefit to anyone, including yourself as an owner-manager on salary.

Should I pay myself salary or dividends?

It depends on the corporate tax position, your personal bracket and whether you want RRSP room and CPP. It is a decision to make with the corporate return in view, not in isolation.

Aaron has done my personal taxes for six years and he’s the best. My files are sometimes complicated and I was not always the most organized client, yet he handles all of it without ever making me feel bad about the mess. He’s fast, he explains everything in plain English, and he always finds credits I would have missed.
