Income that crosses the border, filed once in each country.
Returns and reporting handled by a chartered accountant who works across Canada, the US and Israel, so the same income is not taxed twice and nothing is missed in any of them.

Every system you file in, one plan.
Treaty positions, foreign asset reporting such as T1135, and non-resident withholding, reviewed together rather than country by country.
Canada and the US are the usual pairing, and Canada and Israel are handled on the same basis where your income, property or family situation reaches there.
Where you have income, property or operations in more than one country, the structure is decided before a filing obligation appears rather than after.
Everything in the engagement.
Both countries, together
Canadian and US returns prepared side by side so treaty positions and credits line up rather than conflict.
Canada-US treaty positions
Applied to residency, employment income, pensions and business profits, and documented for the next year.
Foreign reporting
T1135 Foreign Income Verification and the related disclosures where your holdings require them.
Non-resident tax
Part XIII withholding, NR4 reporting and section 216 elections on Canadian rental income.
Where this usually applies.
Canadians with US income or property
Rental property, employment income or investments across the border.
US citizens living in Canada
Filing obligations in both countries every year, regardless of where the income is earned.
Businesses operating in both countries
Where a permanent establishment may have been created without anyone deciding to create one.
Three steps, no surprises.
Establish residency and exposure
We determine residency status and where you actually have a filing obligation.
Map the treaty position
Credits, exemptions and elections are chosen across both returns together.
File both sides
Returns and foreign reporting are filed, with the positions documented for the following year.
The ones we get asked most.
What is cross-border tax?
It is the tax treatment of income, property or business activity that touches more than one country. In practice it means filing in each of them, then using the relevant treaty and foreign tax credits so the same income is not taxed twice. For this firm that most often means Canada and the US, and Canada and Israel.
How do you avoid double taxation between Canada and the US?
Through foreign tax credits and the Canada-US tax treaty. Both returns have to be prepared together, because a credit claimed on one side depends on what was reported on the other.
Who needs to file a T1135?
Any Canadian resident whose specified foreign property cost more than $100,000 CAD at any point in the year. It is based on cost, not current value, and the penalties for missing it are significant.
How does the CRA know about foreign income?
Through information sharing agreements with foreign tax authorities, T1135 filings, and reporting by Canadian financial institutions.
What is non-resident withholding tax?
Part XIII tax withheld at source on Canadian income paid to non-residents, commonly rent, dividends, interest and pensions. The treaty often reduces the rate, but only if the paperwork is in place first.
