Charities and non-profits

Compliance the board can rely on.

The work

Registration is easy to keep and easy to lose.

A registered charity has an annual return, a disbursement quota, receipting rules and restrictions on activity. Missing any of them puts the registration itself at risk, and revocation is far harder to undo than to avoid.

We keep the filings current, the fund accounting clean, and the board reporting clear enough to actually govern from.

What we see

The issues that come up most.

The T3010

The registered charity information return is due six months after year end, and late or inaccurate filing is the most common route to losing registration.

Receipting

Official donation receipts have specific required content and rules on split receipting. Incorrect receipts are a compliance issue for the charity, not the donor.

Restricted funds

Money given for a purpose has to be tracked and spent on that purpose. Without fund accounting, the organisation cannot demonstrate it did.

How it works

Three steps, no surprises.

01

Review the obligations

Registration status, filing history, receipting practice and fund structure reviewed.

02

Set up the books

Fund accounting, payroll and rebate claims running, with board reporting on a schedule.

03

File and report

T3010 or the non-profit return filed on time, with statements prepared for the board and funders.

Questions

The ones we get asked most.

What is the T3010?

The Registered Charity Information Return, due within six months of your fiscal year end. It is public, and it is the CRA’s main window into the organisation.

What is the disbursement quota?

A minimum amount a charity must spend annually on its charitable activities or gifts to qualified donees, calculated on its investment and property assets.

Can we claim back GST/HST?

Registered charities and qualifying non-profits can claim a public service body rebate on a percentage of the tax paid, even where they are not registered for GST/HST.

Do we need an audit?

It depends on your revenue, your incorporating statute and your funders. Some organisations need a review engagement rather than a full audit.

Are honoraria taxable?

Generally yes, and depending on the arrangement they may need to be reported on a T4A or run through payroll.

Aaron has done my personal taxes for six years and he’s the best. My files are sometimes complicated and I was not always the most organized client, yet he handles all of it without ever making me feel bad about the mess. He’s fast, he explains everything in plain English, and he always finds credits I would have missed.
